Echoes Ecology Ltd’s ScoMam (Scottish Mammal) database is a collation of over 5,000 mammal records, collected by Echoes Ecology Ltd and associate surveyors during more than 10 years of surveying. Records include bat (roost and field records), badger, otter, water vole, pine marten and red squirrel. Given a central OS Grid Reference, ScoMam will search through the entries within the database to locate any records within a specified distance (usually 2km, 5km or 10km) of that Grid Reference provided. This information can be used to inform proposed developments within ecologically sensitive areas. The data can be made available in a short report form, maps and/or excel spreadsheets.
The screenshot below shows a typical ScoMam search return. In this example a central Grid Reference of NS 9776 was provided. The black, blue and red boxes represent 2, 5 and 10km buffers respectively and the red highlighted boxes correspond to records of protected species within the database which have been found within the desired search area. This grid can then be cross-referenced to a table of results showing the record type for each grid square. Where no records exist for a given grid square a nil return of ‘false’ is seen.
